Rapid-Fire Questions and Answers with Linda Kovic-Skow

Favorite ice cream flavor?

Dulce de Leche – caramel ice cream swirled together with ribbons of caramel, Mmmm. It’s not French, but it’s delicious.

Early bird or night owl?

Night owl. After years of trying to change this, I’ve finally raised my hands in the air and surrendered.

The book I wish I wrote…

Ahhh, Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. It’s an incredible story filled with vivid descriptions and well-developed characters.

Coffee or tea?

Coffee, with cream.

Favorite sport to watch?

If I had to choose, I’d say football. Sorry, but I’m just not that interested.

One superpower you wish you had?

Telepathic transportation. As an adult, I’ve developed an unreasonable fear of flying. I could avoid airplanes all together and still see the world.

Food preference?

Italian (minus the pasta because I’m gluten intolerant).

Worst “Pet Peeve”?

Litterbugs. Arghhh, I just can’t understand people who think it’s okay to throw their garbage on the ground or out the car window.

Red or white wine?

Both, depends on the occasion and my mood.

One place I really want to visit…

Tahiti (and while I’m at it, I’d have to see Australia).

  1. I enjoyed your story, but I hope for a sequel! I really would like to know of your success in France especially after you moved to Tours and before you returned to the States.

Hi Denise. I’m so pleased you read and enjoyed my story. Where to end this memoir was a difficult decision for me. Once I outlined my diary, I realized that I had too much story for only one book! A natural place to break the story occurs after my au pair experience. My life after this was a very different story – you’ll see why. I’m outlining the rest of my diary and French Encore should be out late 2014.

  2. I am definitely a night owl as well. If it weren’t for the wee hours of the night, I am not sure how much I would get accomplished, which may be why I am reading this at 1 am…

Hee-hee Andy, thanks for staying up late enough to post your comment. Take care and enjoy your travels.

  3. Hi Linda,

Just finished reading your book, absolutely loved it, could not put it down. I could so relate to it as for period of the time while my daughter was living in London she was a non live in nanny for a French family who had three girls and a fourth on the way. Without going into detail like you she was also very unhappy as not only did she have to look after the children but she was also treated like a servant and skivvy. When she left to return to New Zealand they were less than pleased because of the inconvenience to them! I am very curious to know whether you ever saw the family again and were able to retrieve your personal items that you had to leave behind. Looking so forward to the sequel.

      Hi Leonie,

I really enjoyed hearing from you. Thank you so much for you kind words – it puts me over the moon when someone enjoys my book.

How interesting that your daughter worked as an au pair for a French family around the same time as me. It sounds like her experience mirrors mine – I’m not surprised. Now that I’ve written my memoir, I’ve heard many similar stories. As far as your questions go, no, I never spoke to Madam Dubois again and I never retrieved any of my personal items. You’ll hear more about Adam, Evelyne, and Lori in the next book. I also introduce some new characters who become central in my new life in France. There will also be an author’s note wrapping up any loose ends.

I’m more than half-way through the sequel and I’m now aiming for release in winter 2015. I’ll send you an email when it’s published.

In closing, can I ask a favor? Will you please go to my book at Amazon, viewBook.at/FrenchIllusions , and write a quick review? Just in case this is your first, you scroll down the page, click on the words “write a customer review,” choose your star rating, paste your comment in the space provided and press submit. It doesn’t have to be a big deal, just a few heartfelt words will do. Many readers (including me before I became an author) have no idea how important positive reviews are for book promotions.

      All the best to you,
      -Linda
